"Cavemen Built My Skateboard” is a short doc film, shot on black & white + color (Super 8 + 16mm celluloid) that follows a young skateboarder based in Jersey City, NJ. The film reveals the skater’s thoughts, experiences and captures his youthful personality. One day, at the skatepark I was approached by this young kid who told me to go out there, skate and to have fun. Despite being a female, and being intimidated in a skatepark filled with guys. He gave me the courage to just be myself and have a good time with my skateboard. I want to share with you and to others the feeling of what it’s like to be a good human and to live your life. Since that day, I have admired and thanked him for that. From me being that one random person at the skatepark, to then feeling seen. As the director, I want to capture most of the footage on analog film (Super 8/16mm) for this project. I find documenting on film is more fulfilling because to me the results showcase this nostalgic look that can’t be replicated. The way that film takes in light and displays colors just adds another factor of feeling that I want people to receive. There’s also film grain, the texture on the film that looks aesthetically pleasing compared to digital grain that just looks like copy/pasted pixels. People invest in the things they love. I invested in purchasing film cameras and a skateboard. These are items that helped me cope in situations where I felt uncomfortable and brought happiness to me. I now want to use these tools to help me create a project which can help inspire others to stay authentic and to just be themselves.
